Parental Leave Pay Increased

On 1 July 2009, the Parental Leave and Employment Protection (Rate of Parental Leave Payment) Regulations 2009 come into force.  The Regulations increase the rates of weekly parental leave payments for an employee from $407.36 to $429.74 per week.  The increase has been implemented to reflect the recent rise in inflation and cost of living.

The Parental Leave in Employment Protection Act 1987 was amended in 2002 to provide for all eligible employees to receive a government-funded weekly parental leave payment.  Initially, the payment was made for 12 weeks.  This increased to 13 weeks from 1 December 2004 and to 14 weeks from 1 December 2005.

An employee who has worked for the same employer for at least an average of ten hours a week over the immediately preceding 12 months, can apply to their employer for a period of parental leave during pregnancy and/or after the birth of the child.

If you have any questions about parental leave entitlements or for more information, please contact Stephen Corlett.
