Auckland's Super City – What Will Happen to Council Staff?
The Local Government (Tamaki Makaurau Reorganisation) Act 2009 was introduced into Parliament under urgency on 13 May 2009, and despite vigorous debate, was passed on 16 May 2009. The Transition Agency is now established and it may immediately second employees from existing local government organisations, which are to be dissolved on 31 October 2010. Also, once appointed, the interim chief executive of the Auckland Council may employ any of these employees between now and 31 October 2010. There may be some operational disruptions for local organisations, as a result.
In terms of what is to happen to "existing" employees as at 31 October 2010, the Government has said that it will introduce new legislation "before the Auckland Council is established". We will be keeping a close eye on legislative developments regarding the transfer of current local authority employees to the Auckland Council.
