Local Government Commission Determination of Wards, Local Boards and Boundaries for Auckland
On 11 March 2010 the Local Government Commission released its Determinations on Auckland Governance Arrangements and has made some changes in response to the submissions received.
The total number of wards has been increased from 12 to 13 resulting from the split of the proposed Orakei-Maungakiekie Ward into two single member wards, leaving the total number of councillors on the Auckland Council at 20. Some boundary changes have also been made including:
- the inclusion of the Mt Eden and Kingsland communities in the Albert-Eden-Roskill Ward;
- the inclusion of Glen Eden in the Waitakere Ward;
- Otahuhu has been moved to the Manukau Ward.
The number of local boards has also been increased from 19 to 21 by splitting each of the two largest boards, Hibiscus-Albany-East Coast Bays and Waitakere. Some changes have also been made to membership, and a number of electoral subdivisions have been made.
The northern boundary of the Auckland Council remains unchanged, but there are some minor changes to the southern boundary. In particular all of Kariotahi Beach and Paparimu areas are included in Auckland.
We have no doubt the maps detailing the new boundaries will be reviewed with great interest. To see the Determination and the maps go to http://www.lgc.govt.nz/lgcwebsite.nsf/wpg_URL/Auckland-Governance-Index!OpenDocument.
